Understanding the ISA Certified Arborist Requirements

Becoming an ISA Certified Arborist is a significant step in your career, demonstrating a high level of professional knowledge and dedication to tree care. However, before you can sit for the rigorous certification exam, you must meet specific ISA Certified Arborist requirements.

The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) has established these prerequisites to ensure candidates have the necessary hands-on experience and foundational knowledge. Below, we break down exactly what you need to qualify.

Experience Requirements

The most common way to meet the requirements is through practical field experience. The ISA requires a minimum amount of full-time, practical work experience in arboriculture. If you are relying solely on work experience, the requirement is:

  • Three (3) years of full-time, eligible, practical work experience in arboriculture.

"Eligible experience" includes tasks such as pruning, fertilization, cabling and bracing, tree removal, and tree risk assessment. Time spent doing administrative work, mowing lawns, or general landscaping does not count toward this requirement.

Education & Degree Equivalencies

If you have formal education, you can reduce the amount of field experience required. The ISA accepts degrees from accredited educational institutions in specific fields related to arboriculture (e.g., forestry, horticulture, urban forestry, landscape architecture).

  • Two-Year Degree: An Associate's degree (with a minimum of two courses directly related to arboriculture) reduces the work experience requirement to two (2) years.
  • Four-Year Degree: A Bachelor's degree (or higher) in an arboriculture-related field reduces the work experience requirement to just one (1) year.

You will need to submit official transcripts when applying if you are using a degree to meet the requirements.

Assessment-Based Certificate Equivalencies

In addition to college degrees, certain assessment-based certificates or apprenticeships can also offset the work experience requirement:

  • Graduating from a recognized arboriculture apprenticeship program.
  • Holding specific certificates from organizations recognized by the ISA.

Check the official ISA Application Handbook for a complete list of recognized certificate programs.

Preparing for the Exam

Once you meet the ISA Certified Arborist requirements and your application is approved, the next step is passing the 200-question multiple-choice exam. Meeting the experience requirement means you have practical knowledge, but the exam also heavily tests scientific principles and textbook knowledge.

Don't rely on your field experience alone. Use comprehensive study tools like our ISA Flashcards app, which features domain-specific questions, full mock exams, and detailed explanations to ensure you pass on your first attempt!
