ISA Certified Arborist Exam Requirements: Do You Qualify?
Becoming an ISA Certified Arborist is a significant step in your career, demonstrating your commitment to the profession and your expertise in tree care. However, before you can even register for the exam, you must meet specific requirements set by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). This guide outlines everything you need to know about qualifying for the exam.
The Two Main Pathways to Eligibility
The ISA requires candidates to have a solid foundation of experience in arboriculture. There are generally two ways to meet these requirements: through practical experience alone, or through a combination of formal education and practical experience.
Pathway 1: Practical Experience Alone
If you do not have a related degree, you must demonstrate extensive, hands-on experience in the field.
- Requirement: Three or more years of full-time, eligible, practical work experience in arboriculture.
- What counts as "eligible" experience? Time spent directly performing tree care duties such as pruning, fertilization, installation and establishment, diagnosis, and treatment of tree problems, cabling and bracing, or climbing.
- Full-time equivalent: The ISA defines full-time as at least 1,900 hours per year.
Pathway 2: Education + Practical Experience
Holding a degree in arboriculture or a closely related field can reduce the amount of practical experience required to qualify.
- Associate's Degree: A two-year degree in arboriculture and at least two years of full-time practical experience.
- Bachelor's Degree: A four-year degree in arboriculture, forestry, horticulture, or a related field, plus at least one year of full-time practical experience.
- Important Note: Your degree must include a minimum number of courses specifically related to arboriculture or urban forestry. You will be required to submit transcripts for review.
Documenting Your Experience
When you apply for the exam, you cannot simply state that you have the experience; you must prove it.
- Letters of Reference: You will need to provide letters from previous or current employers verifying your hours and the specific duties you performed.
- Self-Employment: If you are self-employed, you must provide alternative documentation, such as contracts, invoices, or tax records, demonstrating your professional arboriculture work.
Additional Requirements
Beyond experience and education, there are a few other prerequisites:
- Application Fee: You must submit the exam application fee (which varies depending on whether you are an ISA member).
- Agreement to the Code of Ethics: All candidates must agree to adhere to the ISA's Code of Ethics for Certified Arborists.
Next Steps
Once you have confirmed you meet the requirements, the next step is to submit your application through the official ISA website. Approval can take several weeks, so plan your study schedule accordingly. Good luck on your journey to becoming certified!
