ISA Certified Arborist Eligibility Requirements
Becoming an ISA Certified Arborist is a significant milestone for professionals in the tree care industry. However, before you can sit for the exam, you must meet specific ISA Certified Arborist eligibility requirements. The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) has established these prerequisites to ensure candidates possess the necessary foundational knowledge and hands-on experience.
In this guide, we break down the three distinct pathways you can take to qualify for the exam, ensuring you know exactly what is required to take the next step in your arboriculture career.
The Three Pathways to Eligibility
The ISA offers flexibility by providing three different options to fulfill the eligibility criteria. You only need to meet the requirements of one of these pathways to qualify for the exam.
Pathway 1: Experience Only
If you do not have a formal degree, you can still become certified through hands-on experience. This is the most common route for many practicing arborists.
- Requirement: A minimum of three years of full-time, eligible, and practical work experience in arboriculture.
- What counts as experience? The ISA defines acceptable experience as practical work such as pruning, fertilization, cabling and bracing, tree climbing, tree risk assessment, and planting. Time spent performing related duties, such as utility line clearance, also qualifies.
- Calculation: The ISA calculates one year of experience as 2,080 hours of work. Therefore, you need a total of 6,240 hours. Volunteer work can be considered, provided it is documented and relevant.
Pathway 2: Two-Year Degree + Experience
If you hold a two-year degree (Associate's degree) in a related field, the required amount of hands-on experience is reduced.
- Requirement: A two-year degree in arboriculture or a closely related field plus two years of full-time practical work experience.
- Eligible Fields of Study: Your degree should ideally be in Arboriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, or a similar discipline. The ISA requires that your coursework include at least two classes directly related to arboriculture (e.g., botany, plant pathology, soils, entomology).
- Experience Needed: 4,160 hours of documented practical experience.
Pathway 3: Four-Year Degree + Experience
For candidates with a Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant scientific field, the experience requirement is further reduced to just one year.
- Requirement: A four-year degree in arboriculture or a closely related field plus one year of full-time practical work experience.
- Eligible Fields of Study: Similar to the two-year degree, acceptable fields include Arboriculture, Urban Forestry, Horticulture, Plant Biology, and Environmental Science. The coursework must demonstrate a focus on tree biology and care.
- Experience Needed: 2,080 hours of documented practical experience.
How to Document Your Experience
Meeting the requirements is only the first part; you must also be able to prove it. When submitting your application to the ISA, you will need to provide:
- Letters of Reference: You must submit reference letters from employers validating your hours and the specific arboricultural duties you performed.
- Official Transcripts: If you are applying via Pathway 2 or 3, you must arrange for your educational institution to send official transcripts directly to the ISA.
- Detailed Work History: Be prepared to provide dates of employment, job titles, and detailed descriptions of your daily responsibilities.
What Does Not Count Towards Experience?
It is important to note that not all outdoor or landscaping work qualifies for the ISA Certified Arborist exam. Activities that generally do not count include:
- Lawn care and mowing
- General landscape maintenance (unless specifically related to tree care)
- Administrative duties or office management that does not involve hands-on arboriculture
- Pesticide application for turf (only tree-related applications count)
Next Steps: Preparing for the Exam
Once you have confirmed that you meet the ISA Certified Arborist eligibility requirements, the next step is to submit your application on the official ISA website. After your application is approved, you will have a 90-day window to schedule and take your exam.
Don't wait until your application is approved to start studying. The exam covers ten comprehensive domains of arboriculture, and thorough preparation is key to your success.
