Maintaining Your ISA Certification: A Guide to CEUs

Earning your ISA Certified Arborist credential is a major achievement, but keeping it active requires ongoing commitment. The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) mandates Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to ensure arborists stay updated on the latest scientific research, safety standards, and best practices. Here is everything you need to know about earning and tracking your CEUs.

How Many CEUs Do I Need?

All ISA certifications are valid for a three-year period. By the end of this cycle, you must accumulate a specific number of CEUs and pay a recertification fee to maintain your status.

The requirements vary depending on your specific credential:

  • ISA Certified Arborist: 30 CEUs
  • ISA Certified Tree Climber: 15 CEUs
  • ISA Certified Tree Worker Aerial Lift Specialist: 15 CEUs
  • ISA Utility Specialist: 36 total CEUs (30 Arborist + 6 Utility)
  • ISA Municipal Specialist: 42 total CEUs (30 Arborist + 12 Municipal)
  • Board Certified Master Arborist (BCMA): 60 CEUs (At least 10 in each area: Science, Practice, and Management)

How to Earn ISA CEUs

There are many flexible ways to earn continuing education credits that fit your schedule and learning style.

  • Conferences and Seminars: Attending local ISA chapter events or the annual international conference is a great way to earn multiple CEUs while networking.
  • Online Courses and Webinars: The ISA offers a vast library of online quizzes and courses. Many third-party providers also offer approved webinars.
  • Reading Arborist Publications: You can earn CEUs by reading approved articles in publications like Arborist News and passing the associated online quizzes.
  • First Aid & CPR Training: Keeping your safety certifications current can often count toward a limited number of CEUs.
  • Advanced Certification Exams: Earning an additional ISA credential (like Tree Risk Assessment Qualification - TRAQ) grants a substantial number of CEUs.

Tracking Your CEUs

While the ISA officially tracks your CEUs in their database, it can take four to six weeks for credits to appear on your account after you attend an event or pass a quiz. It is highly recommended that you keep your own records.

  • Save certificates of completion from any course you take.
  • Regularly check your CEU status on the ISA website dashboard.
  • Set a calendar reminder six months before your expiration date to ensure you are not scrambling for last-minute credits.

Never Stop Learning

Continuing education is more than just a requirement; it is an investment in your career and the trees you care for. Staying informed about new pests, diseases, and safety techniques makes you a more valuable professional.
