How to Become an ISA Certified Arborist
Earning the ISA Certified Arborist® credential is a major milestone in any tree care professional's career. It demonstrates a high level of knowledge, dedication to the profession, and a commitment to arboricultural best practices.
But what exactly does it take to get certified? In this guide, we will break down the ISA Certified Arborist requirements, the application process, and everything you need to know about preparing for the exam.
What is an ISA Certified Arborist?
An ISA Certified Arborist is an individual who has met specific experience requirements and successfully passed a comprehensive exam administered by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). This certification proves that the individual has a thorough understanding of tree biology, diagnosis, maintenance practices, and safety standards.
ISA Certified Arborist Requirements
Before you can even take the exam, you must meet the eligibility requirements set by the ISA. You cannot simply sign up and test out; you need verifiable experience or education. The requirements generally fall into one of three categories:
- Experience Only: You must have at least three years of full-time, eligible, practical work experience in arboriculture. This experience can include pruning, fertilization, installation and establishment, diagnosis and treatment, tree cabling and bracing, and climbing.
- Education + Experience: If you have an associate degree (two-year) in arboriculture, forestry, horticulture, or a related field, you only need two years of practical experience.
- Higher Education + Experience: If you hold a bachelor's degree (four-year) in arboriculture, forestry, horticulture, or a related field, the requirement drops to just one year of practical experience.
Steps to Become Certified
Once you meet the eligibility requirements, you can follow these steps to achieve your certification:
- Submit Your Application: Apply through the ISA website. You will need to provide documentation of your work experience and/or education. This includes letters of reference from employers or clients.
- Pay the Exam Fee: The cost varies depending on whether you are an ISA member or not. Generally, members receive a significant discount, so it is often worth joining the ISA before applying.
- Schedule Your Exam: Once your application is approved, you can schedule your exam. Exams are offered at computer-based testing centers worldwide, or occasionally as paper-based tests hosted by local ISA chapters.
- Study and Prepare: This is the most crucial step. The exam covers 10 different domains of arboriculture. Many candidates underestimate the academic nature of the test.
- Pass the Exam: You must achieve a score of at least 72% to pass the 200-question exam.
Preparing for the Exam
The ISA Certified Arborist exam is notoriously challenging because it tests theoretical knowledge and scientific principles, not just field skills. To maximize your chances of passing on the first try:
- Read the Arborists' Certification Study Guide cover to cover.
- Familiarize yourself with ANSI A300 standards and ANSI Z133 safety standards.
- Use practice tools to test your knowledge retention.
